For our music video, we want to incorporate various different scenes from different locations to present the narrative in the song. By doing this, it will show our knowledge from our research on understanding the song and what sort of elements are commonly used in our chosen artists music videos as well as allowing us to present how we have developed our skills and understanding on how to create a music video.
In the opening scene we hope to film a high up establishing shot of a landscape that will introduce the setting of the music video. This will also be implemented in the end of the music video to then close the setting. We would also like to have the use of the song title in that opening as during our research we discovered that Shawn Mendes used this feature a lot in his music videos. There are many ways we could edit text into our music video however, we don't want it to be too basic. We researched on some ideas we could use to challenge ourselves a bit and make this feature look more effective. We decided on using motion tracking for the text of the song title in a shot as we liked how it looked and believed it would suit our idea of beginning with an establishing shot as we could place the text within it. We got this inspiration from the beginning of Dua Lipa's music video to 'New Rules'. To edit that, we would have to motion track the song title according to the movement of the camera to make sure the movement of the text flows in the same direction as the camera. We would then bring out the corners and edges of the text, to make it have that 3D effect, therefore making it look realistic like its part of the shot.
The next scene would be the two actors singing in a recording room with two microphones while lip syncing to the song. We would like to create a silhouette effect with shadows, as the lighting in the room we are thinking of filming in is very limited to light so we can use those resources to the best of its ability by putting them in front of a blurred out window with low-key lighting behind the camera and high key lighting in front of the camera behind the actors who would be in the foreground. Lighting is a very important aspect for making the music video shots look aesthetically pleasing as well as professional and high standard. In terms of shots in this scene we would make sure to incorporate close ups to really present the lip syncing and show how we link the mouth movement to the song.
The next scene we desire to create is when both actors are walking to a destination with various shots, split screens and transitions showing both of them walking towards each other. When editing this, we will need to half the size of the resolution which is 1920 divided by 2. Then move the x and y coordinates of the frame so they sit next to each other. They will eventually end up in the final scene where they meet in the same location as the establishing shot in the beginning, which will be discussed later.
Throughout the music video we wish to use flashbacks to represent the couples past, as the story line is about a couple who have broken up. Therefore by using flashbacks we can show what they did together when they were a couple to show the audience what they were, making the music video more emotional and relatable, drawing in the viewer. To edit this, we will include a subtle flash transition to show it is cutting to a flashback shot, then lower the saturation of the colours in the clip making it look more dull and like its from the past. This way the audience can clearly see what shots are flashback shots, helping to make the narrative of the story clear and easy to follow. The flashbacks will be representing what is in the characters minds and thoughts helping the audience to understand the narrative and developing on the emotion towards the songs lyrics. Inside these flashbacks, we are hoping to film previous memories they had together for example the dates they went on. We thought we could film at an ice rink, a restaurant, a cinema and them walking together to show their memories. We are hoping to include other transitions between the flashbacks, for example he will be flicking through a photo album and incorporate the use of a green screen where she pulls him through into the flashback as the photos come to life. To edit this, I will have to mask her hand over one clip to the other frame by frame and second by second so it comes out as smooth as possible. Once she reaches for the hand and grabs it, I will then zoom in to the next scene by adding key frames to the clip and making the frame contract. An idea we have for one of the first transitions we could use at the beginning to set the scene will be the male character opening a door to the establishing shot which will include similar editing skills to the previous transition idea talked about. He will open a normal door and we can incorporate the shot we want behind the door by putting the two clips together and masking the second scene second by second as the door is being opened.
The final scene will be the destination they have been walking to which is in a park (where the establishing shot is filmed). Here as they are coming to meet they will lip sync together the final section of the song, making the song meaningful to draw in the audience. They will bump into each other unexpectedly and start to sing. To end the music video we could move the camera to the sky to end the music video in the same way it was started - as an establishing shot.
By doing this task it has allowed us to go through and plan out roughly how our music video will run so we have an expectation of what it will be like and criteria for it to meet. This has helped us to layout and bring together our ideas to see what could work well and give us some guidance on what we need to do.
