Favourite Music Videos and Why

Alex Savvides favourite Music Video
My favourite music video is Closer by The Chainsmokers ft. Halsey. This is my favourite music and video and song, because it is very catchy, it starts off very slow making it seem calm relaxing. Then within seconds, a beat drops and the bass begins to roll through the tune. The song and video makes me happy, as they link together with the visuals and lyrics. The feeling that occurs when a rush of euphoria rushes through your body, is what I get when I listen and watch this. I really like the location used in the music video, as it is very positive and has a good vibe when watch it, the majority of the locations implemented is outside in a field or on the beach. Beaches give off a good sense of relaxation and chill time, giving the same effect when you watch the music video. The mise en scene in this music video is considered well as they are wearing outgoing summer clothes and links well to when the music video was released in the summer. The lighting is very high-key reinforcing that positive effect on the audience, and making it my favourite music video, because there isn't a negative side to it, and makes it relateable to the lyrics and visuals of being with someone who is special to you. The narrative is basic and understandable that the couple were together before and then went separate ways and found each other again in a hotel bar, making the narrative quite meaningful and deep, but it is also a good sense of happiness that it is as if they were meant to be together and that story makes me thrilled to always want to listen and watch. This is also a good convention that we will want to incorporate in our music video as we want to have a couple who break up and go separate ways, however not too sure about getting back together again.

April Woolridge favourite Music Video

My favourite music video is 'Fine China' by Chris Brown. I love this music video because there is so much content within it making it so intriguing and enjoyable to watch. There is so much narrative and performance involved which I think the way he has done it works really well together. For example he is dancing a lip syncing in an action fight scene, putting narrative and performance in one The song is about a girl with a strict and powerful father who isn't allowing her to be with the man she loves (Chris Brown). She meets Chris and leaves her family for him. He doesn't allow her parents to stop her because he knows she is not free. I really like how the artist is a character within the story making it so much more realistic to the viewer. I love the mise en scene that has been considered and this stands out to me the most. I like the locations used because its quite mysterious which works well with the mysterious narrative alongside it and the lighting used makings the shots look quite aesthetically pleasing and sets the mood. They have thought about props for example the car that Chris drives makes him look good and powerful attracting the audience to him. They have also considered costumes because when the girl leaves her parents she gets changed into another dress that her father wouldn't have let her wear connoting how controlling he is to her as she isn't even allowed to wear what she wants. The narrative is quite cultural but is quite like a fantasy which is what I like about it. At the end when her father finds her, the story ends and we don't know what happens next. Its annoying not knowing, however it makes me more intrigued because it makes me to question what happens next and allows me to believe for myself. I do like this idea because I think it works well for drawing in the viewer so I may consider using it in the music video we make.

The first music video is pop based, and we can take these generic conventions and style of filming as ideas for our own music video. This is because our music is pop based and we want to have a very similar style of production to other music videos so it looks professional. The second music video has a good variation on ideas for mise en scene and is heavily narrative and performance based. Therefore this is giving us more ideas on how to organise location to suit the mood of the song, along with how important it is to consider props, lighting, costumes, etc. We liked the idea of starring the artist within the narrative and not showing the ending of the narrative because we believe this makes the music video more interesting and realistic. Therefore we will keep these ideas in mind and develop on them for when it comes to making our music video.
