For this task we are going to research into our chosen artists to learn about who they are and what part the play in the music industry. It is important we know about our chosen artists so we can understand their style of music and themes in their music videos which we will need to follow in order to attract the correct target audience. The reason we chose these artists for our project is because they are both young pop artists who haven't been in the music industry for many years so they are not very well known yet. They also meet the standards we are looking for in an artist in terms of style, age and target audience which is young adults and teens.
Shawn Mendes
Shawn Mendes is a
Canadian singer/songwriter aged 19. At the beginning of 2012, he started to learn
playing the guitar off of YouTube. The year following in 2013, he started
posting cover songs on a social media app called 'Vine' (now discontinued) consisting of short 7 second clips of him performing and this caught the attention of an artist’s manager
named Andrew Gertler. He then proposed a record label to Shawn and started up
his career. Shawn then went on to release an EP and his first album called
'Handwritten'. His single 'Stitches' reached the top 10 in the US and Canada,
and also the number 1 in the UK. 'Stitches' was released in May 2015 and was the first song he created a music video for.
Camila Cabello
Camila Cabello
was born in Cuba, and for most of her early life she and her family moved back
and forth between Havana and Mexico City. At the age of 5 she moved to Miami Florida. At the age of 16 Camila auditioned for the X Factor in
North Carolina and was unfortunately eliminated during boot camp. However she was then called back to sing along with 4 other girls to form a
girl group which know as 'Fifth Harmony'. After being successful in this group for 2 years, Camila left them to become a solo artist. Her first two singles of which she produced became
a big hit. One being 'Bad Things' and the other being 'I Know What You Did Last
Summer'. Recently, she released a single called
'Havana' which has links to her personal life about where she used to live in her childhood, and this is her most successful song so far. It has a amazing music video with a heavy based narrative and lots of acting and performing, and the song its self has hit number 1 in the charts in many countries including the UK. Both of our chosen artists are quite new in the music industry, but are doing very well for themselves at the moment.
Before Shawn Mendes became very big in the music industry, he featured in a lot of productions, he was known being in the soundtrack for 'Descendants', he was a musical guest in 'The Tonight Show Jimmy Fallon', starred in a TV Movie called 'The 89th Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade'. But this all started because of his cover songs that he produced on 'Vine' which is now shut down. Prior to his signing, Shawn toured as a member of the Magcon Tour which was a meet and greet convention alongside other young artists and social media sensations. These all helped boost him into his singing career and helped him to get where his is today.
After Camila Cabello's departure from the group 'Fifth Harmony', Camila released two singles with Shawn Mendes which are 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' and 'Bad Things'. Camila is currently preparing for her release of her debut solo album which also features with artists such as Pitbull.
Camila and Shawn are both good friends and there is currently no controversy between the two. They both have a passion in singing and put so much into their work to become the best they can be and entertain their fans. Having this research on our chosen artists has helped us for creating our music video because we will understand where they fit in the music industry and what they are like in terms of personality etc. This has helped us understand their style of music and how they produce their music videos. Therefore we can implement the conventions they use and develop it further in ours.
