Music Video Target Audiences Questionnaire Results Analysis

From our questionnaires, we have analysed some of the results to look into detail on what people like and dislike about pop music and music videos. We were intrigued to look into what our target audience was interested in.

From this chart we found that 8/12 people preferred high-key lighting in pop based music videos leaving 1/3 of the rest preferring low-key. Although we only asked 11 people, someone said they like both, so we added an extra vote for each one so it wasn't considered as bias and no anomalies would pop up. Therefore as the majority chose high key, we will make sure most of the music video includes this. We can be sure of this by filming in daylight rather than at night and make sure we include as much light as possible.

From this chart 8/15 people preferred fast paced editing and 5/13 preferred slow paced. Although we only asked 11 people, some questioners wrote they liked both, so we added an extra vote for each one so it wasn't considered as bias and no anomalies would pop up. As the majority chose fast paced we will make sure our music video includes this so it is upbeat and shows a lot of content keeping our audience intrigued.

We found out that people who were into pop music didn't always watch pop based music videos or music videos in general, but they still gave us enough ideas to influence us how we would craft our own. This answer didn't come as much of a surprise to us because we know that a lot of people now days don't watch music videos compared to how much people used to when they were really big in the 1980/90s. For the questions about the artists, we asked if they knew who the artists were and their favourite songs/music videos. This way we can take ideas and editing techniques from there performances and implement similar variations of their features in our music video. It also allowed us to understand how popular they are in the music industry in which was not as popular as we thought.

Since the majority of the people preferred fast paced editing, we will include a lot of transitions between shots, but at the same time keep the tempo of the cuts at the speed of the beat of the song so it flows with the song and can be viewed properly by the audience so it doesn't look like the shots are moving too fast. This way it will keep our target audience satisfied enough to carry on watching whilst preventing it from looking messy as there will be a lot of detail and content. We will incorporate a range of high-key and low-key lighting in our performance, but have more high-key and some low-key areas so that our target audience has that range of colour grading and it doesn't prevent anyone from disliking the lighting in the music video, keeping our music video likeable by as broad of an audience as possible.

Each question has helped us towards our ideas for our music video. The first question is asking if they like the genre we are considering to use, and 100% of answers were positive. We then asked if they listen to the genre often, which was more of a curiosity question to see whether they knew what to expect in a pop based music video. About half of the results said they listen to it often which surprised us as they all said they listen to it. Following on, we then wanted to know if they like music produced by our two chosen artists, and if yes which songs. This is so we could watch and learn what they did in their music videos, and implement similar conventions used in their music videos to develop our own ideas from. Its important that we understand the style of the artists and how they fit into the music industry so our target audience would be attracted to our music video. Most people we asked don't actually listen to these artists that often and some didn't even know who Camila Cabello was. However this wasn't too much of a surprise to us because we chose the song based off the fact that it isn't well known. We then asked if they prefer slow or fast paced editing, so we can get an idea of what type of post-production skills we will need to consider. The majority said they prefer fast paced music videos but a few still said slow paced depending on the speed of the beats in the song. Therefore we will try and incorporate both within it to make the shots flow well with the music video.

We wanted to find out what our target audience would expect in a pop based music video as we wanted to make sure they would enjoy it. A lot of people mentioned dancing, parties and flashing lights depending on the style of music. Therefore we can consider using these ideas in our own music video so it is more enjoyable for our target audience as this is what they expect to see. Then we asked about lighting to see if our target audience preferred low-key or high-key lighting, this is so we could take it into consideration when filming the final product. High key was the most popular option meaning we should consider filming more in the day as people find this more preferable. Finally, we asked if they would actually watch the music video of our chosen song, which was purely a cosmetic question to see if the audience would be interested in the music video we are producing. Most people actually said no because they don't often watch music videos which is a bit of a problem to us. We will have to constantly keep in mind what your target audience like about music videos to make sure they will want to watch it and enjoy it.

Overall this research will help us when creating our music video because we have been given an insight to what our target audience like and their opinions on music videos which we can take into account and develop our ideas from. This will allow us to make sure we meet with whats expected in our music video and get feedback from a primary source so that people will enjoy watching it.
